Street Photo Thailand

Akkara Naktamna was born in Bangkok, Thailand in 1979. He started to photograph from travelling and realized that we might don’t photograph just in a holiday or celebrate events because we can photograph everyday, everywhere, by street photography.

In his opinion, street photography is “uncategorized” and not just a life picture but it is everything which happens and relates to a public place. Street photography could be a human or unhuman, on the street, under the sea or in the sky. We couldn’t defined it as long as you would look in the picture’s detail.

Now Akkara works in Bangkok and shoots mainly street photography.

The word “Click” is a simple word, but to Chatchai Boonyaprapatsara, it means the scene of City, Citizen, Culture, Context, Conflict, Colour and Concept meeting up in one “Click” coincidentally on the street.

The exhibition “Click :The Coincident” is a collection of 5 years experiences of the unpredictable city’s scenes (Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore). Where and when he finds a mystical communication link between the subjects, feels and sees the continuous dialog between his main subject and the culture and ambient of our modern society in the background, it is a worthwhile coincidence. He fires a quick snap street shot that makes a “Click” in his head: visually inspiring, conceptually food for thought and as many times simply entertaining.

Son of a Thai diplomat, Wasiksiri spent his childhood in different Western countries, according to where his father was posted. This multi-cultural experience has enabled Wasiksiri to view own country and people with a dual insider-outsider perspective.

EDUCATION
Wasiksiri attended school in Canberra, Australia, from 1963-1965. He then moved to Wellington, New Zealand, where he finished high school, and in 1974 studied architectural draughting for two years at Wellington Polytechnic.

New Zealand is where Wasiksiri took interest in photography at age the age of 13. He started out by photographing people and pop culture, which have remained his principal subjects of interest ever since.

In 1976 at age 20, Wasiksiri moved to Los Angeles. He attended Los Angeles City College, where he was on the Dean’s honor list, and graduated in 1978 with an Associate in Arts degree in Film and Photography. In 1979 he took a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio and Television Broadcasting at California State University, Los Angeles, graduating in 1981.

PHOTOGRAPHIC CAREER
Returning to Thailand in 1983, Wasiksiri has been based ever since in Bangkok.
He started his career as a professional photographer by shooting for well-known fashion magazines. His new wave style at that time created quiet a stir in the fashion industry. As well as lighting his models using a colored gel filter, he shot with underexposed tungsten film in the pale light before sunrise to created a saturated bluish effect.

Wasiksiri was also recognised as one of the first Thai photographers to seriously explore his inner psyche and transfer those ideas into surreal photographs. Among his most celebrated series were ‘Composition red (red rock)’ (1982), ’Mysterious shells’ (1993), and ‘Dreams of lost childhood’ (1995).

Wasiksiri founded his own studio, Persona, 25 years ago and has been doing commercial photography ever since. With his distinctive style Wasiksiri is always in demand, shooting for both local and international clients. Meanwhile, Wasiksiri still finds time to do street photography, focusing mainly on Thailand.

He has had many solo and group exhibitions, and his work hangs in museums as well as private and public collections around the globe. Wasiksiri has also lectured and held seminars at several universities. He is now working on his own book about the Thai way of life, and photographing for two other books due out in the coming months.

BOOKS
Graphis Photo 95. Selected work published in this compendium by Rotovision (1995).

Thailand: 9 Days in the Kingdom. Dow Wasiksiri was chosen as one of 55 leading world photographers for this book and exhibition project. Wasiksiri has among the most pictures selected, alongside bestselling photographers including Greg Gorman, James Nachtwey, Steve McCurry, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Olivier Fölmi, Mike Yamashita, Bruno Barbey, Abbas, Eric Valli and Michael Freeman. To be published worldwide by Editions Didier Millet (Paris/Singapore, plus 5 foreign language editions) in November 2007.

Very Bangkok. Principal photographer of a book by Philip Cornwel-Smith (author of ‘Very Thai: Everyday Popular Culture’), to be published by River Books (London/Bangkok)

As a founder, I created streetphotothailand.com web site on Sep 2008, until now it is still the only web site in Thailand which focus on street photography genre. For the record, on Oct 28, 2012 there are 948 members and 7,932 photos in there before it is closed down. Thank you all members for your contributions and sharing.

November 1, 2012 is the first day for new look of  www.streetphotothailand.com.

I am a story-telling photographer. What I try to do is using a camera to tell my stories, things I’ve seen in the wordless form. A photograph is the result of my understanding, my interpretation of the world  based on my personal life experiences. For me the most important thing is telling the ordinary extraordinary, grasping people’s attention and make them stop and find a certain meaning from the photograph in front of them.

“If you can smell the street by looking at the photo, it’s a street photograph.” – Bruce Gilden

I couldn’t agree more with Bruce so I don’t care much about  “What is” or “What is not” street photograph. My goal is doing the best to make sure you can smell the street from my stories.

Have a nice day!

I have been interested in taking photographs of various daily events, special happenings and surrounding people.

Beginning from many years ago with my small point and shoot camera always been carried around in my pocket. it’s the great tool for me to take pictures of what’s been going on in my life as my personal diary.

For me, street photography is not such sophisticated and has no pattern at all. The most important thing is just that we have to notice and find out the story and then promptly shoot it, that’s all.

My inspired photographers are Garry Winogrand, Tony Ray Jones, Bruce Gilden and Richard Kalvar.

Street Photography
